Detroit Works Project Mtg on Saturday 2/5/11

I am attending the Detroit Works Meeting at the American Serbian Hall on Van Dyke. Lot's of people here, especially for a Saturday morning. I am very encouraged and impressed because of the strong interest in restoring and strengthening the City of Detroit. The format that was used today is impressive, because it allowed for audience participation by using an electronic voting device. And it was a very peaceful environment. This device allowed us to respond to several questions regarding the future of Detroit and to vote the best option. Following the votes for each question, the City of Detroit revealed the responses. It was very interesting to observe the differing opinions of Detroiters. I think that it will be an exciting challenge to move the City of Detroit forward step by step.

Highlights from event:

1) Only 8% of Detroit residents use public transportation'
2) 33% of Detroit households do not have access to private transportation
3) $425 committed to light rail
4) On February 12, there will be a light rail public comment event at the Public Library downtown (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
5) Only 10% of all DPS schools (K-12) perform above state average

Marja Winters facilitated the meeting. At least 3 members from Detroit Works participated.

There were several City of Detroit department staff who attended. They responded to the
Q & A and met with residents following the meeting.

The presentation will be available on the Detroit Works website, including the responses of audience participants.
